New Zealand Here We Come

06/01/2018 by John 2 Comments

Our entire world is about to be turned upside down, literally. Summer will be winter. There will be a new set of stars in the sky. Temperature and distance are measured in a different metric and we’ll have to master driving on the opposite side of the road. We are moving to New Zealand.

There are so many conflicting emotions within us both. For me, there is excitement mixed with fear and dread. I dread the tasks that lie before us and fear that we’re making a terrible mistake. But I am excited as well. Excited to see what it feels like to spend an extended time in a country that is not my own. Excited to explore new places. Excited to see who I am there. And even excited to be a witness to the crazy weather of Wellington, the city that will be our new home.

Flights are purchased and the visa application process has begun. There is much sorting and purging ahead of us. It is a clean slate, a chance to cut away the remaining excess of the possessions we have clung to since leaving our full-time home in Asheville three years ago. It is an opportunity to start again.

A Rain Soaked Run

05/25/2018 by John Leave a Comment

The rain fell hard this evening after the workday was done. I put on my shoes and out the door I went as the drops began to fall. They gathered steam as so did I. Around the town my footsteps fell while the drops hit the ground. A chill wind blew and the beacon flash from across the sound at the Cape Lookout lighthouse was masked by veils of water. Shirt soaked through, water squishing out the mesh of my shoes and dripping off the tip of my nose. What could be more exquisite than this?

Too Many Inputs

05/18/2018 by John Leave a Comment

Front Page of the New York Times

How often do I cede what to think about to others? The ubiquity of advertisements takes away much of my choice when it comes to where my attention goes. But often, I do have the choice. Every time I open up social media or subscribe to an email list, I am letting someone else decide what will occupy my mind for a period of time. It feels innocuous at the moment it is occurring but is it healthy when 12 or 24 hours later, I am still thinking about some random bit of information I let in?

The thing is, thoughts are little pebbles that roll downhill dislodging larger stones as they go until there is an avalanche. I often find myself buried in thoughts and unable to find the way out. An innocent glance at a Facebook post can lead to hours of researching a topic I never knew I had any interest in. Before I know it, the day is full of pursuing the thoughts and interests of someone else instead of my own.

I should be more mindful of how many times I open the door for new inputs to come in. I should be careful about the sources and ask myself if I am really getting any benefit from them. I want quality over quantity but I keep choosing quantity. I keep swimming in the shallow end of the pool of information when what I long for is to go deep.
