Sacred Places

04/07/2015 by John Leave a Comment

When you think about it, places are large parts of our psyche. We go to places we love – wildlands, rivers, deserts, seas, and mountains – go there when we’re hurting from the treatment of other humans or the society we live in. We need those sanctuaries, those sacred places; there’re medicine for whatever ails us. ~Katie Lee

Horseshoe Bend, Green River, UtahThe latest episode of The Dirtbag Diaries, Blind Date with the Desert, has me thinking a lot about my upcoming run in Utah and in a larger context, the places that I hold sacred. For me, those locations include the windy beaches of the North Carolina Outer Banks, the solitude found in the depths of the Florida Everglades, and the mashup of mountains and coastlines that make up New Zealand. These are the places I want to return to whenever I feel that something in my life is out of balance, or when I just need some time to think.

What about you? What places do you hold sacred?

Let The Adventure Begin

04/03/2015 by John 10 Comments

Floating down the Green River

Floating down the Green River, June of 2003.

Yesterday I finished my final day of being a full-time salaried employee. Today I am beginning a new journey. Over the next six weeks, my spouse and I will comb through our belongings, getting rid of most of them, and winnowing down the rest into what will fit into a 2006 Toyota Matrix hatchback. It’s time to follow The Dirtbag Way.

The journey will take us to the canyons of Utah where I will take part in my first 100-mile ultra-marathon. Afterwards, we plan on celebrating whatever happens during the run by floating the Green River through Stillwater and Labyrinth Canyons. From there, we don’t know where the adventure will take us. We will play, connect with old friends, and piece together some work along the way. Where and when we will have a place to call home again is unknown.

It is an exciting and scary time. The stability of having two steady paychecks and the same spot to lay our heads every night has lulled us into a state of quiet complacency. But the yearning deep within for adventure will not let us grow too comfortable, so we must go. I do not know where this adventure will lead, but I hope that you will come along for the ride.
